The Pittsburgh North Optimist Foundation, in conjunction with Optimist International Foundation, is participating in this year’s 2018-2019 Optimist International Essay Contest.  The contest is divided into two levels of competition:  Club and District.  

PNOC is the local club level.


  • Entrant must be under age 19 and a current high school student.

  • This year’s topic is “When All the World's Problems are Solved is Optimism Still Necessary?”

  • Each entry must begin with a title page containing:  the official topic, number of words, writer’s name, address, phone number, name of school, and date of birth.

  • Essays must be typewritten and double-spaced and should be 700-800 words in length (title, footnotes and bibliography are not included in the final word count; hyphenated words count as one word)

  • Any quotations or copyrighted material used must be identified properly.

  • No references can be made in the essay that identifies the student, parents, school, community or sponsoring Optimist Club or District.

  • Deadline for entry at the local level is Friday, February 8, 2019.  The application form is attached.  Contestants must furnish a copy of their birth certificate or passport when entering.
